  • GET BACK AT BANKS / CREDIT CARDS / GAS ETC ETC

Not anything to do with my sponsored cycle - was sent this through e-mail and thought it was worth sharing.  Please let me know if you try it and response from bank!!

    Don

A 98 year old woman wrote this to her bank. The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in The Times.

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three 'nanoseconds' must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it.

I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account £30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways.

I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory details of his/ her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service.

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further.

When you call me, press buttons as follows:

1-- To make an appointment to see me.

2-- To query a missing payment.

3-- To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.

4-- To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.

5-- To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.

6-- To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.

7-- To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the Authorized Contact.)

8-- To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through 8

9-- To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.

May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, New Year.

    Your Humble Client

(Remember: This was written by a 98 year old woman; DOESN'T SHE MAKE YOU

    PROUD!!?)

  • BAD CAR DRIVERS

Went out for a cycle today - cycled just over 12 miles at an average of 10.6mph.  Did not feel great at the end of it and while the sun was out all of the time it was very cold again.  My feet were like lumps of ice when I finished.   As I was cycling through Wickwar a car cut me up and the look on the lady drivers face - suggested she had not seen me.  How the h+++ can you miss an 8' long bright orange bike is beyond me.

About 3 mile frther on a man (one each) nearly hit me as well.  I have a mirror and can see cars coming up behind me but it is very hard to say if they have seen me or not - I think people see me but do not see the need to indicate and pass wide.  I have flashing red lights, flashing lights on a flourescent band and yet it seems I am hard to see.

I know that car drivers in the main are careful but their are a lot of idiots out driving.  On the roads I am driving on I do not hold anyone up - I guess some people just do not like bikes

It seems I will need to do something else to make myself more visible - forgot to say I am also wearing a flourescent yellow jacket.  Will think about some type of flag so that it will attract some attention - mind you I need to make sure it does not slow me down.

Just seen a poor cyclist hit on "THE BILL" so everyone think cyclist

Take care and stay safe and if you are a car driver - be kind to cyclists.

  • 40 years married - NO NOT ME, CYCLE

    Where do I start

Went out for a cycle today - it was not very good.  Weather was great, almost no wind, bike had no problems but I took almost 10 minutes longer to cycle the 6 miles.  Not sure what was wrong but I just did not feel 100% - could be an age thing, diet, late nights or working too hard
    .

40 years ago today I was best man at Andrew and Alice's wedding.  Andrew lived next door to us and his  parents died when he was young and he wanted to live with us - so really he is my brother.  I was thinking today that I had forgotten to order the flowers so on the morning of the wedding we drove to Fort William and bought 2 white bibles.  They looked very nice but I am sure flowers would have been better.  I think my car broke down on the way to the Fort but due to old age I can't remember what happened after that.

40 years is a long time together and they are both very happy.  If Vanessa and I make 40 years together then I will be 92 years young.  No doubt in a wheel chair dribbling all over the place, not a pretty sight.

I am planning to cycle again tomorrow so I hope it is much improved - think I will probably try and cycle much longer - mabye aim for around 30 miles.

Sometime during April I am plannig to cycle for about 4 hours one weekend and in May the 60+ miles to John Longs house.  Will keep you updated.

    Take care and stay safe

  • weekend away + wedding anniversarry

On Saturday we went to Marriott Hotel and Country club near Coventry for Sandersons break.  Excellent hotel and facilities - we both took swimming gear and gear for gym.  As the huge bed with about a million pillows was more appealling we did not go anywhere near the gym or pool.

Meal in the evening was  superb and we even managed a few dances (legs and knees survivued)  Star turn was a female singer - sort of Diana Ross lookalike - she was great and really got the crowd going.

Came home on Sunday but unfortunately too tired to go out cycling.  Today was our 8th Wedding anniversarry so we took the dogs out for a walk to Westonbirt Arboretum - well worth visiting if you are ever in this part of the woods!!

I cycled this morning for 12.5 miles at an average of 10.5 mph.  It was Bl**** cold and pretty windy - every way I turned the wind seemed to be against me - cant have been all of the time but it felt like it.  For the first time ever on this bike my backside was sore cycling - hopefuly it will improve.  Good days exercise as the walk was nearly 2 hours.

Will be puting some photos on to the web site.

Keep well and stay safe.  First 2 sites are for sponsoring, 3rd site has photographs

  • WHERE DOES THE TIME GO????

    How time flies

It is ages since I was out cycling.  Early starts 0400 and late nights home 2000 has meant it is almost impossible to train as I have been so tired.  Other problem is that this weekend we are away attending a function in Coventry through Vanessa's work

Really looking forward to time away - no animals or kids to worry about, not taking computer so life should be very restful.
Will make use of the hotels facility including the swimming pool and gym - so at least will manage to get some exercise.

On Monday will go for cycle and add some pictures.  SOrry not much to report but will make up next week.

    Take care and stay safe.

  • TREBLE VISION, INSOMNIA, B****Y WIND

On Monday I was driving towards Moreton in Marsh to visit one of my favourite clients when I experienced an attack of triple vision.  This means I see 3 roads but do not know which of the three I am driving on, immediately I put on the indicators and slowly stopped at the side of the road - fortunately I stopped on the grass verge.  Very scary.

On one of the previous occasions it happened I was driving at around 85mph on M4 (sorry officer my Speedo was faulty - it would have been 65mph) just before it joins M5 - all I could do was put on hazard lights and slowly move towards the side of the road - across 4 lanes.  Again I was fortunate that when I stopped I was across the slow lane and hard shoulder.  Doctors do not know reason for this condition but I think it is when I forget my eye drops for some time.

Another reason could be lack of sleep - both of us are not getting enough sleep, cats wake us up wanting to go out or are scratching the bedroom window wanting to come in, we are overtired from early morning starts and or we are habitually waking up around 0400 as the alarm goes off at this time at least once per week.  If anyone has any solutions for a good nights sleep would appreciate their input.

Cycled today - but it was very cold and windy.  Just did the short loop but longer than usual by 8 minutes.  I think the weather is to improve over the weekend so look forward to getting more exercise.  I do hope the wind starts to vanish very soon - it is very hard cycling with the wind against you.  I am hoping the wind will not be around in August.

Sam Walker has said he is hopeing to be able to cycle part of the route with me so  that should be fun.  He will need to practice cycling with his brakes on so that he does not leave me too  far behind.

    Take care and stay safe.

  • 300 MPH Winds !!!

On Saturday I went to go out for a cycle.  Got changed, bike out and as I started off I looked back to see the chain was going over the roller bearings (had forgotten to do this), just then a gust of wind caught the bike and knocked me to the ground - I banged and cut my head. Being a total woos I went back home.

Have changed my photo site and you can find the details below.

Sunday 0200 got up to watch the Australlian F1 Grand Prix - it was very good but did mean I went up to bed at around 0530.  Woke up at 0820 and went down for breakfast.  As it was Mothers day the boys had cooked Vanessa a nice breakfast and I benefited by getting mine cooked as well.

The day was very windy and I guess the wind speed was close to 300 mph! - well it was very strong and gusting.  During the day we had some sun, strong windws, snow and hailstones.  This meant no training today - so as far as my exercise went it was a complete washout.

Working local tomorrow so this means I should be able to get out when I come home at night.

Will keep you informed - take care and stay safe.

  • BISON & HOSPITAL

It has been quite a day.  Went to work this morning and saw deer and Bison (photographs on site).  The animals are part of the many attaractions at Cattle Country in Berkeley, Gloucestershire - great day out for all the family.

Then it was off to the hospital for my Echogram.  The young lady in the Hospital reassured me by saying this was the test they do for ladies who are pregnant, or maybe it was how they do the test?? - does this mean that I am pregnant and this is why I am feeling tired?  Guess I will here from the Doctor as and when they have anything to tell me.

Set the alarm this morning at 600 and when it sounded I switched
it off, went back to sleep until 0700.  When I eventually got up I struggled down stairs and went for my cycle.  Cycled 6.7 miles at an average speed of 11.6 mph and a top speed of 24.5 mph - (top speed was downhill!!!!!).

During the cycle I had some pain in my legs but I hope this was only a one off - they say it takes at least 8 weeks for  you to get used to cycling a recumbent.

  • INJURY !!!@@@

    Hi all,

Not a great day.  On Tuesday and Wednesday I was away working so did not do any training on the bike.  Today after another hard day of work  I  came home with the intention of cycling.  First of all I decided to  decant some of my  wine into the next stage of the process.

I picked up, or at least attempted to lift a 5 gallon container which unfortunately was sticking to the floor.  I tried to lift and put my back out.

Yes I know, that you should check the weight before lifting, bend your knees, lift gently and then straighten - I should know I am a b+++++++ safety consultant!!!!!!  Like many other people in the UK I thought it would not happen to me, have done this may times before, it is not heavy and I can lift it.

I am setting the alarm for 0600 and will go for a cycle in the morning.  Then off to do a hard days work followed by my trip to the hospital for my Echogram.

Thanks to all who have sponsored and hope everyone else is saving hard to sponsor nearer the time.

  • DINING OUT - AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eating out again on Sunday night - we went to the Loch Fyne Fish Restaurant in Bristol. Excellent meal, great ambience, and the food could not be faulted in anyway.  Most of the produce comes from Scotland and it is if the highest quality. (some pics on web)

Vanessa and I had a sea food platter between us and consisted of Lobster, prawns, mussells, langoustine, oysters, clams and cockles.  It was really great - a meal to die for.

The sweets were smashing with a good choice.  Highly recommend this for special ocassions.

Only went for a very easy 1 mile cycle when I came hone from work as I was K*** after being out 3 nights over the weekend - it is certainly a sign I am getting old.  Back to reality now with no nights out planned.

Working away the next two days means it is 0430 getting up and home around 1930 - so no chance of cycle training.  Still it will be easy to get back into it again.

    Take care and stay safe.

  • wine, food, training

Where do I begin - went out with Dorothy and Charles on Friday night to the Gumstool Inn near Cirencester  excellent food, great service andnot terribly expensive.  When we arrived (we had not booked) we managed to get the last table.  Having eaten the food I can understand why it is so popular.

The food was cooked exceptionally well and presented in such a way that you could hardly wait to eat it.  (some photos on my picture site)

We talked, ate, drank a very nice wine and generally had a good time.

On Sat I did not do any cycling so in the evening we all went to watch Hot Fuzz at the cinema.  Very funny.  Much of the filming was in Glouycestershire and highlights the beautiful scenery we have in this area - well worth a visit.

Today I cycled on my own and did the normal short route  6.5 miles in 34.44 minutes at an average speed of 11.1mph and a top speed downhill of 26.7 mph.  I felt quite good during the cycle although the head wind at the beginning and end was strong.  I would like to get my Ave mph to something like 12mph and this would then be a reasonable speed in which to do the cycle.

Going to get ready to go  out again tonight.

    Take care and stay safe.

  • training again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good day - went out training again.  12.6 miles.  Vanessa decided to cycle with me today and jsut as we were leaving my chain broke.  I took a link out and we were ready to go.  Thankfully I have a tool that allows you to remove a link and then close without the need for a special link.  I always carry this tool with me so I now know if the worst comes to the worst on the road I am able to fix bike.

The sun was out, a slight wind but by the time we got back home it was very cold.  The bike seems to be going well but I think I need to oil and grease it again - the wet weather plays hell with everything.

Good to have brakes that work well - first time I have been happy with the rear brake. 12 miles is about one fith of what I hope to cycle per day - not sure that thought sits comfortably with me at the moment.

    Going out now.

    Take care and stay safe.

  • medical condition update

    Two Blogs in one day

Went to Hospital but it was no for the Echogram - that is now next week.  Specialist has said my tiredness and feeling lethargic is possibly a combination of my age and the early starts I have several times a week, long drives and then home late. Working long hours and at weekends is probably needing to be looked at and some better planning introduced.

Today I have only had one cup of tea as against my normal 8 or 9 by now.  The reduction in sugar and milk will make a difference to my overall fitness.

Cutting down on milk and drinking sweet soya milk has in the past got rid of all my aches and pains.  We eat sensibly anyway so not much change needed in that department.

Only one small problem my Sister Dorothy and her Husband Charlie are down from Scotland for the weekend  so we will be eating out - mind you as long as I am reasonably sensible it should not matter too much.

    Take care and stay safe

  • return cycle

Collected bike from Howard this morning and cycled it home.  Improved my average MPH to just over 10 mph instead of just under 10 mph.  Sun was shining, birds singing it really was very nice.

Felt pretty good after the cycle and really enjoyed it - looking forward to cycling tomorrow.  Getting ready to go to the hospital for checks.

Bought shoes for cycling  - made by Lakeland and great for walking as well which will help when pushing up the hills.  Bearings on bike fixed, mirror, new brake cables, wheels adjusted and greased all over.  Total bill came to  £105 - this cycling lark is nearly as dear as having a car!!

Guess I need to stop and try and make myself presentable for the Hospital - will probably take a good couple of hours

  • Phantom Car!!!!

Phoned Howard today and the bike is ready.  Going to pick it up tomorrow around 0915 and then cycle it home before heading of to the hospital. He has fitted 2 head bearings, new rear brake cable and brake pads.  Some minor issue with the front wheel but I am not sure what.

Was at Oldham today and as usual spent a lot of time sitting doing nothing on the M6.  Why is it that you sit in a traffic jam, wheels do not move for 45 minutes and when you get going again - nothing to be seen.  Does a phantom car descend from the clouds and park across three lanes while the Aliens  eat  space crisps, galaxy biscuits and drink pints of  black hole  nutrients?

The Aliens then press a button in the car cockpit, the invisible cloak is deployed and they slowly melt into thin air.  I think the Government should organise a focus group to study this effect - it should be real easy as this happens many times a day on the M6.  I am sure Tony and friends could even organise a conference in the Bahamas on this subject sometime in the summer.

Must stop now as I think I need an early night - up 0430 this morning, cycle and hospital tomorrow.  Can't have too much excitement in the one day.

    Take care and stay safe

  • spring time has arrived???

Weather today was fantastic, sun, gentle breeze and lovelly sky the sort of day that you want to go for a cycle ride.  Hopefully this is the first sign of Spring as the weather recently has been wet, wet, wet.  Unfortunately not able to get  bike back from repair shop before he closes.  Will not be able to pick up bike tomorrow (March 7th)  as I am leaving at 0500 and will not be home until 1900.  This means 8th is best day for collecting the bike.

Unfortunately I go into hospital on 8th for my Echogram.  Not nervous about the test as the Hospital has sent a letter and it informs you there is no pain.  I am a big woose so this was good news.  Will let you know how the tests go - mabye they will be able to kick start my energy back to what it was like when I was a teenager - I can hardly remember that far back but it must be at a higher level  than present and that would certainly help with the cycle.

At the bottom of each blog I am going to include the sites where donations/sponsorship can be made.  Please give generously as the money goes to two very good causes.  Many thanks to all who have donated.

  • TRAINING FREE DAY

Have decided not to train today as it is p** with rain and also a cold wind.  So being the wimp I am have decided not to take the road bike out for training.  Instead I have decided to finish my winemaking - now have 30 gallons of wine on the go - this hopefully will make around 120 bottles of wine.  Majority is plum wine and then apple and pears mixed.

This will be ready after 3 - 6 months so I have started a 5 gallong kit of Rose that will be drinkable in 5 days - yes 5 days!!!  Will let you know what it tastes like.

Will phone Howard on Monday to see how he is progressing with the bike repairs.  I expect when he is finished  the bike will be in A1 condition.

Bought cycling shoes with some of my birthday money so this will make any uphill walking much easier.  On previous cycling when I cycled to see John Long (will  do an article about him at a later date)  a distance of  63 miles  I was wearing shoes with cleats on the bottom and the walking uphill was a nightmare.  So with my new shoes walking will be much easier and certainly no difference in cycling.

    Stay safe and take care

  • MORE CYCLE REPAIRS!!!!

    Hi all,

Cycled to Dursley today 9.8 miles and averaged just below 10mph. This is the average speed I expected to be at on the bike so I am quite pleased.  Certainly found cycling up the hills much easier than on the higher geared road bike.  The down side of course is that on the flat and downhill the high gear is not so  high.   I guess like all things in life you can't have everything.and therefore comprises are needed.

It was a beautiful spring morning and it was good to see all the flowers out - have added a couple of pictures to my site showing the Daffs and primroses.

The bike will not be ready until Tuesday at the earliest so that is going to hold me up slightly.  May ride on the road bike tomorrow but it is dependant on the weather.  Vanessa has put her back out - caused by a fit of coughing!!! so not sure if she is going to be up to cycling tomorrow.  Vanessa is in training for the Bristol half marathon (2nd year) but she has had so much bad luck her training is now behind schedule - still I am sure she will get back on track soon.

Cycling through Stinchcombe their is a nice well so I thought would wet my whistle - unfortunately it is not working.  No doubt some Council or other has decided to turn it off "elf N safety" or something.  I passed two cyclists and three people on horses - some or all who may have wished a drink.  I guess in this modern age they assume everyone is in cars or carry expensive bottled water with them!!!

Must stop as I am going to start making some home made plum wine.

    Take care and stay safe
    Don

  • TOMORROWS CYCLE

I am cycling to Dursley tomorrow (Sat) which is 15 miles to get the cycle shop to replace the bearings. This will then mean I have to cycle the 15 miles back home.

Just a little bit of history of Dursley which as you all know is near the South end of the Cotswold way.

Dursley has a rich and varied industrial history founded in the 15th century with woolen cloth mufacturing. The industry developed significantly over the centuries and by the beginning of the 19th century there were seven cloth mills in the town with many more in neighbouring parishes. Cloth manufacturing still exists in the valley to this day with the sole example of Cam Mills on Everlands now run by the Milliken company in the buildings once occupied by Hunt & Winterbotham.

The 19th century also saw the arrival of heavier engineering in the town with the establishment of R A Lister and Company which went on to become the town's largest employer with upwards of 4000 employees at its peak. R A Lister manufactured a range of petrol, paraffin and diesel engines which were, and still are, used in a multitude of applications worldwide. In 1986 the company merged with Petters Ltd. of Staines to form Lister-Petter Ltd. which is still a major employer within the town although on a much smaller scale.

On Sunday I am hoping to cycle for 3 hours and that will really be a good guide for me to assess my fitness and then decide if I need to change my training regime.  I hope the plan I have will be suitable and not need modifying.

Keep you informed - take care and stay safe

  • why sponsor 2 cancer charities?

Two good reasons/answers to the above question:

    (i)  3 years ago today my Dad died from cancer. He smoked somewhere between 10 - 25+ cigarettes a day for something like 70 years and it came as no surprise to us that he developed cancer.  Everyone who new my Dad said he was a true Gentleman and he would help anyone at any time.  On today, and on other days I think of Dad and reflect on the good times we had together and also wish that I had done more for him, helped him more, not said some of the things to him and also wished that the unspoken words had been said.  He leaves a big empty space in out life that can never be filled but we are thankful for the time we had together.  I wish I was more like him and much more considerate and understanding of others - I aim to be like him but in reality I do not come close.

When I was young we had a great time - did not have loads of money but had a loving family which is something money can not buy.

Penny Brohn charity teaches people how to help themselves and to change the way they live with cancer.  They provide not just help to the person diagnosed but to their loved ones as well.  Dad would have fully supported this concept.

(ii)  Janet Walker died from cancer last year and although I never met her she has certainly inspired me and this is what is driving me to complete this cycle.

Although suffering from cancer Janet continued to run a home, care for her son Dominic and keep husband Sam in check!  This loving family managed to do so much in the short time they had together and Janet even managed to keep working as a Nurse, dedicated to caring for others at a time when she was very ill.

St Annes Hospice looked after Janet in her final days and it is fitting that Sam wants to help them.  They need a staggering £16,000 per day to continue helping others.

Both these reasons are why I am cycling for charity and they are both cancer charities.  I know their are many other deserving charities and good causes but I am sure you understand why I have selected my two.

We should all periodically reflect on what we are doing with our life, are we happy, do we help family and friends and are we a good role model for youngsters?  If not we need to start making life choices that will help us to become a better human being - it will not be easy and it will take some of us longer than others - the key is taking the first small step.

I am taking the bike into the cycle shop in Dursley today to get the bearings replaced and I will keep you updated on progress.

    Take care and stay safe.
